Best Tourist Place in Meghalaya

All the states of India are known for their different culture and civilization.

 Some of these are considered culturally rich for their mythological image, while some have become famous worldwide for their geographical conditions. 

One of such states is 'Meghalaya' included in the seven sister states located on the east side of India. The state of Meghalaya is famous for its beautiful Himalayan ranges, enchanting dense forests and pulsating rivers.

 This state is completely known as a hill state. Its capital is Shillong. The word Meghalaya means- Megh + Aalaya i.e. 'the house of clouds (clouds)'. Meghalaya receives the highest rainfall in the whole world. That is why it has got the status of being the wettest state of India.



Meghalaya is also famous for its varied climatic features and unique culture. Even though this state is divided into 11 different districts today, but mainly 3 tribes reside here.

 They are known by the names Garo, Khasi and Jaintia. The specialty of these tribes is that they follow the tradition of matriarchal society. 

That is, unlike the way the patriarchal society is prevalent in the whole of India, women are given more recognition here and after marriage, men have to come and live at their wife's house. The people here use English more along with the ethnic language.

1- Vaders Lake



Waders Lake is one of the historical lakes of Meghalaya. This lake is located in Shillong, the capital of the state of Meghalaya. It is a beautifully constructed artificial lake which is shaped like a horse's hoof. 

The lake was once named after William Ward, the Chief Commissioner of Assam. It is said that this lake was built for the entertainment of the prisoners of that time, which is built in the middle of the city of Shillong. 

Many types of green vegetation are present around the lake and a lot of colorful fish have been reared in the lake.

2- Nartiang



Nartiang is considered to be the most favorite and popular picnic spot of Meghalaya. This area sits in Jaintia Hills. Nartiang is also famous for trekking with its natural beauty and unique shades. 

Here you find many wonderful caves and some such places to visit from where you cannot take your sight even if you want. This region is called the whole 'Heart of Meghalaya'. 

At present, along with being a tourist place, its historical importance is also no less. In fact, it is said that years ago, the King Jaintia of this region used to reside in his capital, Jaintia East. This area is now part of Bangladesh. 

When the king resided here, he declared Nartiang, a small village on the hill, as his summer capital. Due to this reason Nartiang got fame for tourism because the movement of people kept increasing here and various types of cultural relations were also established. 

Now the two districts comprising West Jaintia Hills and East Jaintia Hills are collectively called Jaintia Hills. It is said that the famous Durga temple of Nartiang is also one of the main attractions of the area, which tourists are eager to see.


 




3- Cherrapunji



Cherrapunji is counted among the major destinations of Meghalaya. Where it rains throughout the year.

 If seen, the fame of Meghalaya has been due to Cherrapunji all over the world because due to continuous rains at this place, it is prominent among the places with the highest rainfall.


 Cherrapunji is locally known as 'Sohra'. This place is famous all over the world due to its cleanliness and scenic surroundings. Actually, due to the rains, the soil of this place is very light, due to which no cultivation can be done here. 

This is also because due to rain, the deforestation continues and the top layer of the soil has become very weak, due to which it gets washed away from one place to another.

4- Masinram



Masinram is a beautiful tourist destination in Meghalaya located near Cherrapunji. There are beautiful views and such natural possibilities that nature lovers love this place. The literal meaning of Masinram is 'Mao' derived from the Khasi word. 

This word means stone because the shape of the village settled in this area appears almost like the Shivalingam, hence this area is called Masinram. 

This earth provides tourists visiting here with a beautiful experience as well as an opportunity to enjoy spectacular views. Masinram area is also world famous for the stalagmite collected from here.

6- Elephanta Fall

Please tell that this place falls on the way to Cherrapunji. Elephanta Falls here attracts tourists with its thrilling views. This area is about 12 kilometers away from Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya. 

Let us tell you that in ancient times this place was addressed as Shaid Lai Pateng Khoshi but the British renamed it as Elephanta Call.

7- Uniyam



Uniyam area is one of the important tourist places in Meghalaya. This place is located at a distance of about 17 kilometers from Shillong. The 'Uniyam Water Sports Complex' is located here. It is a fun place for tourists.

9- West Garo Hills

This area is the second most populous district of Meghalaya and is also considered to be the second largest city. The Garos, a dominant tribe in the region, belong to the Bodo families of Tibetan Burmans.

 It is these tribes that give place to the matrilineal society and are considered one of the rare tribes. Many biosphere reserves, lakes and beautiful hills reside in Garo Hills, so tourists are always excited to come here.

 In fact, apart from these attractive hills, there are also many such places which are famous for their mythological importance and culture. Rang Pani and Bhait Bari are prominent in these areas.
